What Is EMF and How Can It Affect Sleep
Electromagnetic fields (EMF) are a natural part of the modern environment. They are produced by the operation of electrical devices, Wi‑Fi networks, mobile phones and other technologies that surround us every day.
During the day we usually don’t notice their presence. At night, however, the body rests and regenerates, and a person spends several hours in one place – which is one reason why people pay attention to the environment in their bedroom.
EMF sources in the home
EMF in the bedroom usually doesn’t come from a single source. Most often it is a combination of several influences inside the apartment or house and in its surroundings:
- Wi‑Fi routers and wireless devices
- mobile phones, smartwatches and chargers by the bed
- electrical wiring in the walls, extension cords and power distribution
- transmitters near your home and sources from neighboring rooms
Electrosmog
The term electrosmog is often used for the sum of electromagnetic fields in the environment. It doesn’t mean “one single thing”, but rather a combination of different sources in the home and its surroundings.
Why people are concerned about EMF during sleep
Sleep is one of the most important regeneration processes. That is why people pay attention to the quality of their environment – light, noise, temperature, and also the overall “load” of technology in the bedroom.
A practical approach is often a combination: reduce disruptive sources (where possible) and, at the same time, create a more controlled space right around the bed.
Shielding and the Faraday cage
One approach is shielding from electromagnetic radiation, which is based on the principle known as the Faraday cage. In simple terms, it means creating a protected space into which fewer external electromagnetic waves penetrate.

What the research says
The topic of EMF is the subject of various studies and research. Their aim is to better understand the long-term effects of these factors on the body.
An overview of relevant findings can be found in the studies on EMF section, and if you like, also read the article on the NREM sleep stage.
